Photo Essay - Faces & Races
by
Larry Libow
The forecast for a partly sunny day was not even close but the slightly wet and cool conditions didn't seem to bother the great turnout of Mass Velocity sprinters and friends. This year I was able to arrange for USATF sanctioning, FAT timing, 40-49 year old participation and a better-run, Mass Senior Games T&F meet. The number of runners in red was nearly overwhelming and, as the photos hopefully convey, a good meet was had by all.
The crowd begins to congregate at the starting line for the 100m
First up are Mike Travers (L) and Terrence Haynes (R)

They ran a great race, side-by-side, the entire distance

The M50 heat was packed. In lane 2 is Tom Gillen, Lane 5 is Cochise
McBride, Rob Porcaro in Lane 6,
Tucker Taft in Lane 7 and unseen is Charlie Kelley in Lane 8
Some smiles as the guys walk back after their 100m heat

I was unable to take any photos of my M55/M60 heat but ran back
to the starting line to catch
the next heat. That's Spencer Parrish in Lane 5 and John Polevey in Lane 4

From (L-R), Bob Marchetti, Cochise McBride and Butch Blake relax
under
the Mass Velocity canopy while waiting for the 200m heats to begin

Ladies first in the 200m with Hillen von Maltzahn on left in red,
Mary Roman in blue to the right of Hillen and on the rail is Gail Johns-Rees

Gail flies by the camera

In Cinema Scope we have the M50 heat in the 200m with, from left
to right:
Tucker Taft, Rob Porcaro, James Morton, Cochise McBride, Tom Gillen and Terrence Haynes

I scratched in the 200m due to knee and quad aches and pains so
I was able to shoot this 200m heat:
Red runners from left to right, Roger Pierce, Bob Marchetti, Tom Cunningham, Butch Blake

Red uniforms and blue spikes can only mean Butch and Roger

Once again Spencer and John are side-by-side, this time in the
200m

Meet Bob Matteson of Bennington, VT, a new member of Mass Velocity.
Now running M85 but about to turn 90!
Butch in a great-looking warm-up
Terrence
The 800m had a great heat with Rich Clark (#332) and Jeff Weatherhead
(#132)
Jon Tetherly was running hard in the same heat

On the backstretch it was anyone's race
Rich had Jeff in his sights on the last turn . . .
. . .and out-kicked him for the victory

Here's Mary Harada starting the 400m . . .
. . . and finishing strong

Gail on the first turn of the 400m

Becky Connolly of MVS has the look of sheer determination

Gail had Hillen's number all day long, this time besting her in
the 400m

In the 400m first turn: Tuck, Charlie, James & Terrence

James Morton (#389) had some great times today and was unbeatable
Charlie and Tuck give it their all

In the next 400m heat, in red from left, Roger, Warren,
Tom and Butch

I guess not every shot is perfectly in focus. Note James cheering
on his teammates

Once again it's a battle between Roger and Butch

Likewise between Warren and Tom
These guys make the 400m look easy but it's obviously NOT easy
Butch lends Roger a hand, err... a head!?
Sufficiently recovered

Abe Bernstein, (far left) from Long Island is a possible new MVTC
member
Spencer sporting red, now that he's in Mass Velocity

Jeff Weatherhead
Rob Porcaro in his brand new MVTC speedsuit
Bob Matteson
Tom Cunningham
James Morton
Terrence Haynes
Mary Roman (W70, CT) and hopefully soon to become a member of MVTC.
You might have noticed Mary's photo on the June cover of NMN,
shown breaking the W70 U.S. superweight record.
That's it from the Mass Senior Games. You won't see me on the
track until, hopefully, July 22nd for the East Regional Masters Championships. I need to get myself healed and
hopefully I'll have enough time. There are lots of meets coming up and I encourage whoever has a digital camera
to take photos and send them to me. I also encourage all of you to do the recruiting for Mass Velocity that I won't
be doing at these meets. If they're not in red, find out why. Run fast and stay healthy!
